Baby, it's cold outside!

Ruby looks so cute in her coat and snood, I'm almost glad for the cold weather:) We had a nice walk today to burn some of those Christmas calories we indulged in yesterday. Ruby and Journey got extra canned food warmed up and smothered over their kibble along with several sets of chewies and lamb jerkey. Our Christmas company loved Ruby and were really taken with her sweet and well-behaved disposition. We had our Christmas bath on Sunday at the dog wash at Red Bandana. She is so tolerant and able to "go with" a situation, even is she really doesn't like it (e.g. a bath!). Her fur is sooooooooo soft and cuddly - almost like a stuffed animal, only better!

Ruby's Doing So Well!

Ruby learned the stairs up to the bedrooms in one day! My husband put some cheap indoor/outdoor carpet on them so she would not be put off by them being so slippery. After a few times of leading her up and down on a lead, she had it down pat. Ruby is a dream walking the n'hood on a leash. She's not that interested in stopping to sniff and mark (which our male does every four feet or so!). She walks at pace by my side and just enjoys being out and about. Although initially labeled as "not small dog tolerant" we have not had any reaction from her at all on n'hood walks when we come across small fluff balls :) even though they usually come on with their guns blazin' (they soooooooo overcompensate for their size). We also have three small dogs across our back fence that make a bee-line to the fence and carry on and on while Ruby and Journey are out in the backyard. Ruby has not even considered all the noise and drama worthy of investigation! She simply lets them act like fools :) and attends to her business. She and Journey have been play-fighting in the house (usually initiated by Journey). She enjoys it for a while but when we see she's had enough, we divert Journey to some other activity or toy. I think she's really a good sport to indulge him - he's wanted to play-fight with our previous grey and fosters, but so far, nobody's taken the bait but Ruby. She's a sweetheart and loves to be around the family.

Here's Ruby coming down the stairs.
Ruby LOVES the foam bed.
Out of focus - but cute none-the-less.

Ruby Gets a Medal!

Ruby was a Running Mate today at Sega's 5th Annual Ateletes Helping Athletes 5k Run. She has a great time and seemed to really enjoy being around so many other greyhounds - it was a smell-fest! Her Running Mate came and found her in the crowd and she loved getting all the extra attention. She and Journey are very companionable with each other and have seem to like the company. Ruby must not have had to deal with many stairs in her previous home, or at least has not had a lot of experience with uncarpeted stairs. So that is our next mission. We want to get her confident to tackle them so no matter where she finds her forever home, she will be able to cope. She and Journey loved the smell of the salmon burgers we had earlier last week so I think I will cook one up and try the method of a food enticement on every other stair. That worked well with our previous foster so we'll try it again.

Just settling in.....

We picked Quicksilver (nka Ruby) up last Thursday night and she is settling in well at our home. Friday night was so warm and beautiful that we decided to give Ruby and our grey (Journey) a bath on the driveway! Ruby wasn't crazy about being wet, but she seemed to love all the rubbing and stroking while getting dried off with the towel. Even before we checked her racing records online, we suspected she had been pretty good based on how she handled herself in the backyard during a few sprints with Journey! Her attitude was, "bring it on"!!! Other than her adorable grey face, she shows very little signs of being a nine year old. We opt to have our grey (and now Ruby) sleep in our bedroom at night. We have her in an ex-pen for now so that she is not tempted to wander during the night. She is an absolute angel during the night. She waits patiently in the morning for us to signal the start of the day. No whining or fussing for us to get up before we are ready! She is an enthusiastic eater and would like to finish Journey's meal as well, but we are working on curbing that behavior. She gets it, but sees no harm in trying! Here are photos of her after her bath Friday night when she sacked out on the bed in the family room and was dead to the world . . .

More than just a Lap Dog

Quick Silver now prefers human laps rather than running laps.

Here she is taking a little nap with Chris after a long afternoon watching him work on his VW.

She is still waititng for her forever home. All she needs is a little lap room, and a big place in your heart.

Quicksilver has a"naptime" buddy

What were they thinking? This bed is clearly not big enough for both of us!!
